In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, Anthropic, a startup with backing from industry giants Google and Amazon.com, has made a significant announcement. On Monday, the company introduced its latest suite of AI models known as Claude 3, representing the latest advancement in the race for more powerful AI technology.
According to Anthropic, the flagship model in the Claude 3 family, Claude 3 Opus, surpasses competing models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini 1.0 Ultra in various benchmark exams. CEO Dario Amodei described Claude 3 Opus as the “Rolls-Royce of models” in the current landscape.
While advances from competitors are either anticipated or already previewed, the independent verification of Anthropic’s claims is yet to be confirmed by Reuters.
This announcement follows a series of competitive unveilings in the AI space, with Anthropic having released Claude 2 in July. The ongoing competition highlights the tech industry’s focus on outperforming benchmarks in AI performance, even as businesses grapple with the practical implementation of these technologies.
Daniela Amodei, President of Anthropic, emphasized that customers willing to pay a higher price would choose Claude 3 Opus for tasks requiring the utmost cognitive complexity, such as intricate financial analysis.
Anthropic revealed its pricing strategy for Claude 3 Opus, charging $15 for processing every 1 million tokens, with smaller models available at a fraction of this cost. In comparison, OpenAI charges $10 per million tokens for its GPT-4 Turbo model.
An important distinction of Claude 3 is its status as Anthropic’s first “multimodal” AI suite. This means the AI can respond to both text and image queries, a feature also found in some rival models. The generative capabilities of Claude 3 allow it to create new content on demand, building on the popularity of models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
While Anthropic’s models exhibit advancements in biological knowledge, cyber-related knowledge, and autonomy, the company emphasized its commitment to AI safety, placing Claude 3 at AI Safety Level 2 (ASL-2) in accordance with its Responsible Scaling Policy.
CEO Amodei explained that Claude 3 would analyze, but not produce, images, citing lower enterprise demand for this feature. This decision aligns with recent concerns in the industry, as Google paused image-generation features for its Gemini chatbot due to issues related to accuracy and diversity.
Anthropic plans to make Claude 3 models available through cloud platforms such as Amazon and Google. Additionally, the company will offer direct access to the models in 159 countries, providing a global reach for its advanced AI technology.
